In 1998, Tony Kaye released the highly acclaimed film, American History X, a haunting movie about racist extremism in the United States, scoring Edward Norton his first Oscar nomination. Years later, Kaye directed the psychological drama, Detachment starring Adrien Brody as depressed high school teacher. Needless to say, Tony Kaye is not known for making particularly uplifting films. But this year at Tribeca, Kaye and company had the North American premiere of their new comedy, The Trainer starring Julia Fox, Vito Schnabel, Beverly D'Angelo, Paris Hilton, Gina Gerschon, Lenny Kravitz, and more. If that sounds like the craziest thing you've ever heard, just wait until you see the film...

It's hard to put into words what makes The Trainer such a unique film, I anticipate its something that audiences are either going to love or loathe. It stars art dealer, Vito Schnabel as main character, Jack Flex, a delusional Los Angeles social climber and "fitness expert," obsessed with selling his newest workout device, the Heavy Hat. His ambitions lead him to some truly hard to watch moments of him harassing celebrities, taking advantage of people, and over-stepping his bounds in ways you wouldn't believe
Vito Schnabel, son of famed director, Julian Schnabel, also worked as producer and screenwriter alongside Jeff Solomon.. The Trainer premiered back in October at the Rome Film Festival in Italy to an audience of perplexed Europeans. The film also has an unbelievably stacked cast, featuring performances and appearances from Julia Fox, Steven Van Zandt, Beverly D'Angelo, Bella Thorne, Gina Gerschon, Paris Hilton, Gayle King, Lenny Kravitz, FINNEAS, Bono, Snoop Dogg, Ai Weiwei, Don lemon, Jason Momoa, Colleen Camp, Chris Rock, Gus Van Sant, and Sharon Stone. Yes, I'm serious.
What really sets this film apart is the look which I can only describe as visual assault in the best way possible. Even if you were to ask the most seasoned cinephile who they thought directed this movie, they'd never guess Tony Kaye in a million years. They'd probably say something along the lines of "If Yorgos Lanthimos and Boots Riley had a brain child."
Kaye has had a long career producing music videos, commercials, and some extremely heavy feature films, The Trainer is a completely singular work. Characterized by its extreme editing style, consisting of vibrant colors, flashing lights, and visuals taken right out of an acid trip. I can't help but be completely in awe of the editing team consisting of: Bob Jenkis, Sam Sneade, and Robert Lee. The editing really compliments Tony Kaye's unorthodox shooting style, there are very few shots in this film that aren't constantly moving or closely zoomed in, which captures the film's intense energy so well. You'll feel like you're really in the room with these characters while also high out of your mind on drugs.

The Trainer has a very specific, modern sense of humor that will appeal to a younger crowd. At my screening I could count on one hand how many moments there were where the audience wasn't roaring with laughter. Which again, is extremely surprising considering the tone of Tony Kaye's previous features.
I've been following the production of this film for a few years now but never in a million years could I have predicted what I saw this week. It's honestly heartwarming to see just how many big, A-list celebrities have full faith in this project and dove in headfirst. Julia Fox's performance will make you absolutely fall in love with her and Paris Hilton proves to us all that she's more than just a head of blonde hair and a catchphrase.
Overall, The Trainer is not a film that is going to please anybody, nor does it feel the need to. It's a film that absolutely nobody saw coming, which is exactly what makes it so special. Hopefully the right people will find this film upon release and something tells me we might have a future viral hit on our hands.
In the meantime, here's to letting creative people do whatever the hell they want!
