For the past decade, audiences have been practically begging studios to go back to 2D animation. After an over-saturation of CGI and 3D animation, the traditional style has largely gone out of fashion, but fans have been eagerly waiting for more original stories in the animation style they grew up loving. Yesterday, Sony Pictures Animation released their first 2D animated film, Fixed, by revered director, Genndy Tartakovsky, serving not only as a return to tradition, but also the first adult animated feature from the studio. After premiering at France's Annecy Animation Festival in June, audiences have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Fixed to Netflix. But despite coming from such a celebrated director, the comedy in Fixed don't just miss the mark, they roll over and play dead.

Genndy Tartakovsky is a legendary figure in the world of animation. He earned his stripes by creating Dexter's Laboratory, Samurai Jack, and Primal, as well as directing the first three Hotel Transylvania films. He helped put Sony Animation, Cartoon Network, and Adult Swim on the map. At this point, Genndy has earned the right to do whatever the hell he wants, and apparently what he wants to make is Fixed, the story of a dog's final hedonistic day before being neutered. Starring the vocal talents of Adam DeVine, Kathryn Hahn, Idris Elba, Fred Armisen, Beck Bennett, and more. But not even the star-studded cast could prevent Fixed from being meandering, uncomfortable and downright hard to watch.

Fixed follows Bull the 2 year old mutt who learns that his prized testicles are about to be taken from him. Fearing that his unrequited love, Honey the Borzoi won't be interested in him, Bull sets out for an evening of pure raunchy excess. The entire 86 minute film is packed to the gills with some of the most brazen sexual humor Netflix has ever seen, but audiences seem to think that Genndy has gone too far.

I want to preface this by saying I am not a prude. I have enjoyed more than my fair share of raunchy, offensive comedy over the years, but Fixed is something else entirely. For the majority of the runtime I felt deeply uncomfortable, which is not easy to do. The film goes quite literally balls-to-the-wall in terms of both the script and visuals, including the constant motif of detailed doggie sphincters

I'm trying to be delicate reviewing this film, but the truth is that every single joke in Fixed is based on dog-sex. There's no variety and it'll leave you cringing rather than laughing along. While I can appreciate that the film takes risks, this feels like a bold swing and a miss. After the 300th doggie dick joke you'll be practically forcing yourself not to turn off the TV. Even as a grown adult I couldn't help but think...am I old enough to be watching this?

Because Fixed is animated, I guarantee that some oblivious parents will turn this on for their children thinking it's a PG film, only to be greeted with a downright unbearable sequence of Bull going on a humping rampage throughout the house. It's been a long time since a film made me this deeply uncomfortable, which is a real pity because I was genuinely excited to see what Genndy Tartakovsky had in store. Let's hope that despite this mishap, we get more 2D animated films in the future and that Sony learns when enough is enough. Long story short, I think Fixed is long overdue to be put down.
